Arbor Records - Native American, New Age, and Ethnic Music

NativeRadio.com has been playing artists from Arbor Records since we started in 2000, and we have watched with great pleasure at how well and how quickly, they have grown. And grown they have, into one of the finest record labels in this or any other genre! Each month we will be Spotlighting another artist from Arbor Records. This month we feature Derek Miller, one of the finest Bluesmen in the world!

I had the pleasure of meeting Brandon Friesen the Founder of Arbor Records in 2002 and was immediately impressed. Brandon, in a word, is a Gentleman. Soft spoken, polite, and sharp as a tack ...smile! There was never a doubt in his mind that Arbor Records would become a player. Not by anything that Brandon said, but you just knew that he would pilot the ship he created, to amazing heights. Brandon was also one of the first to realize the importance and power of a great website. He was also the first Indigenous label to utilize flash. From the very beginning, Brandon and Arbor Records were cutting edge in both style and substance. The Arbor Records website is a joy to experience and offers easy to navigate categories, artist bio and videos, and much more!

Artist Spotlight: Stevie Salas
Stevie Salas Stevie was handpicked by George Clinton as the guitarist for Clinton's albums. He's skipped cities in a private jet with Rod Stewart, playing sold-out stadiums. He signed the largest deal Island Records had ever forked over for a new artist. Most books name him as one of the Top 50 Guitarists of All Time. Just months ago Mick Jagger tapped him to be his guitarist, as did Chris Daughtry & Jordin Sparx. His first Arbor Records release The Earth and the Sun won in the Alternative Rock category at the 2007 Indian Summer Music Awards and also won 'Best Rock Recording' at the 2008 Native American Music Awards.

In between arena tours and multiple TV show appearances, Stevie took time out to record a new solo album 'Be What It Is'. Which contains timeless rock songs featuring some of today's greatest rock players, notably: Matt Sorum (Velvet Revolver, Guns N Roses); Dave Abruzzese (Pearl Jam); Juan Alderete (Mars Volta); Matt Sherrod (Crowded House, Beck); Brian Tichy (Billy Idol, Ozzy Osborne).

'Be What It Is' includes 12 rocking songs that proves to be yet another great success for Stevie Salas. So far Be What It Is has already won the 2008 ISMA for (Best Alternative Rock Album and the 2008 CAMA for Best International Album).

Artist Spotlight: Derek Miller

During that first meeting I was introduced to Derek Miller an artist on Arbor Records. Derek was "cool". Later that night I would find out just how cool he was when he performed "Music Is The Medicine" on stage. My jaw dropped when I saw and heard him play. Derek is one of the finest guitar players in the world, and then he combines this with his ability to carry you away with his voice and message. All I can say is run ..don't walk to add Derek Miller to your collection!

Derek was born and raised on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario and has been performing for over 15 years. Blues based rock inspired by the likes of Link Wray, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and Hank Williams Sr. is how his music is best described.

Derek's live performances strike a contrast between the dark, soul searching messages in his music and his light hearted enthusiasm and vitality. Derek performs his music with an air of feeling totally comfortable on stage… like he was born explicitly to write, sing and play.
