The International Native American Flute Association is an organization whose goal is to foster the preservation, appreciation, and advancement of the Native American flute, as well as other world flute traditions. The organization is open to all who are interested. Information about the organization, as well as a membership form, may found at: www.inafa.org
In July 2008, the International Native American Flute Association held its convention at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Every other year, the organization presents a convention which includes premier performers in the Native American flute world, as well as gifted performers of other world flute traditions. Three headlining performers are presented each evening, with sidestage performers in the afternoons. There are also classes during the day dealing with a myriad of topics.
In Eau Claire, Wisconsin, is a stellar recording studio called Skyline Studio that belongs to Ivar Lunde, Jr., a good friend of Peter Phippen's who is an INAFA Advisory Board member. Discussion ensued about creating a CD project with the performers playing at the 2008 INAFA convention. Performers were approached and asked if they would be willing to go into the studio and perform an improvisation for the INAFA CD project. The artists were very gracious and agreed. In the process, they waived all royalties to their music, allowing INAFA ownership of the music for use in raising money for the organization.
Peter Phippen and Ivar Lunde, Jr. produced the CD, with Dr. Kathleen Joyce-Grendahl serving as the executive producer for the project. The end result is Clear Water Reflections, Native American and World Flute Music. This vibrant flute collection contains more than 76 minutes of original, improvisatory flute music from around the world. The CD is now receiving focused airplay on www.NativeRadio.com and on National Public Radio’s programs called ECHOES.
Clear Water Reflections includes music of ancient and contemporary Native American flutes, Irish flute, Norwegian overtone flute (seljefløyte), Chinese dizi and xiao, bansuri, shakuhachi, ancient Mayan clay flutes, wind flute, Tarahumara drum, and the unique Dead Whistle. The beauty of these wondrous flutes is revealed in both solo and ensemble settings, with accompaniment from pipe organ, voice, cello, guitar, bass, Hang drum, bodhrán, various world percussion, udu, marxophone, dumbek, conga, and Native American frame drum. Performers on this CD include: R. Carlos Nakai, Mark Holland with Autumn's Child, Joseph FireCrow, Kevin Locke, Peter Phippen, Xavier Quijas Yxayotl, Jan Seiden, Skip Healy, Michael Graham Allen (Coyote Oldman), Frank Montano (Anakwad), Randy Granger, Ann Licater, Dr. Tim Lane, Tiit Raid, Jonny Lipford, and Bobb Fantuazzo.
