Leonard Peltier's Sentence Commuted!
Leonard Peltier has been in prison for 50 years, and today his sentence was commuted! Mr. Peltier is a First Nations activist and member of the American Indian Movement (AIM) who was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of two Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents. This photo was his arrest photo.
The shooting happened on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota in a June 26, 1975 shootout. He was sentenced to two consecutive terms of life imprisonment.
Today, January 20, 2025, Mr. Peltier's sentence was commuted to indefinite house arrest by President Joe Biden shortly before he left office. ndncollective.org has a great article on Mr. Peltier's pardon.

I first became aware of Mr. Peltier's case and cause in 1994, and he was one of two inspirations in my creation of NativeRadio.com in 1999. The other was the movie “Thunderheart” in 1992 with Val Kilmer, Graham Greene, and John Trudell.
In 1997 the late and great First Nations artist Robbie Robertson created the song “Sacrifice” where Mr. Peltier spoke with Robbie over the phone. Hear in Mr. Peltier’s own words what happened in 1975.
