8/25/2007     Mike Gouchie Seriously Hurt

I recently learned that Mike Gouchie was injured in an automobile accident. Mike is extremely talented and we play his music. He is also nominated for several Music Awards. Mike..speedy recovery!

Multi-award Winning Aboriginal Country Music Recording Artist - Mike Gouchie is extremely lucky to be alive! On July 5, 2007 Mike Gouchie and Bryan Desjarlais were traveling back to Prince George from Penticton, BC when they collided with a moose on Highway 97 just 20 minutes from their final destination. Mike Gouchie was left with lacerations to his face and arms, broken bones and a severe concussion which has left him with what doctors are saying will be a temporary speech impairment until the brain swelling has gone down. Gouchie struggled to tell reporters "I feel thankful to be alive".

Gouchie was returning to Prince George from Penticton where he had dropped off his son for summer holidays when the accident happened. With him was his ex-brother-in-law, Bryan Desjarlais, who escaped with no serious injuries. Gouchie was knocked unconscious by the impact, which completely destroyed his minivan. Gouchie's head was sandwiched causing swelling to his brain and lacerations to the front and back of his head. Desjarlais saw the moose and was able to brace himself for the impact unlike Gouchie. Gouchie laid unconscious for 45 minutes while a rescue team used the 'jaws of life' to remove him from his vehicle. The only thing that Gouchie remembers was driving along the dark highway and saying, "Well that was a good trip, I'm so glad we're almost home."

Gouchie was still in the transition from moving from Edmonton, Alberta back to his hometown Prince George to be near his Mother after losing his father, Ernie Gouchie to a long battle with throat cancer.

"I feel a lot of pressure in my head like my brain is swollen. I'm not thinking right. I'm disoriented and simple tasks have become difficult. I won't be able to get back to my playing and singing for awhile, and I worry if I can't do that anymore, then what?"

6/28/2007     Save Net Radio!

One of our listeners emailed me that he had contacted his State representatives on behalf of NativeRadio.com and SaveNetRadio.org (thank you again). He also wished to learn about our position and what this might do to NativeRadio.com. I thought I would share my reply in the hopes that it might answer others questions.

Hi Kevin:

Thank you so very much for emailing me, and particularly for contacting your State's Representatives! There is a great deal of concern in the Webcasting community about these new rates. In my opinion: the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and their collection arm SoundExchange have one goal, and that is to drive out of business every Internet Radio Webcaster they can. The rates that they convinced the CARP panel to impose are sure to kill Internet Radio. No business can afford to pay out 150% + of their annual revenues. The RIAA is trying to justify their own existence at the expense of the Independant Artist community, who's only real voice out here are the independent webcasters.

As you and I both know, we cannot buy Native American music in the record stores (with very few exceptions). If we are lucky, we might find 4-10 CD's in the World music sections. How does the World hear people like Douglas Blue Feather, Michael Bucher, Star Nayea, and the literally 1000's of other amazing Native artists, if not for Internet radio.

The major record labels are blaming their CD sales decline on Internet radio. The real reason mainstream CD sales are down (if you believe them at all) is the world now has thousands of new artists to purchase, from all over the World. Remember how hard it use to be to acquire "imports"..smile

The major (corporate owned) radio stations are corporate constrained on what they promote, and only have a designated amount of artists they can play due to a finite amount of air time. They too are threatened by the success of Internet radio. In my opinion, HD radio is a flop, as Internet radio devices are here.

I created NativeRadio.com 7 years ago as an act of love for the Indigenous culture in North America, and wanted the World to share in these amazingly proud people's music and stories. It is one of the reasons NativeRadio.com remains free of charge, even though it continues to cost me significantly more than I make from it. Do you realize that the RIAA convinced the CARP that it would be justified in charging us $500 for every listener?

I was a Music Licensing Executive with BMI in Nashville and am very familiar with copyright issues. It is one of the reasons I have always required Broadcast Releases to air music on NativeRadio.com. While this should legally protect us from the rates, no one knows for sure.

We are just starting to find ways, as an industry, to create audio advertising opportunities and systems. The world's first Internet radio ad insertion system is still new. Internet radio is still an infant, and needs time to mature. Perhaps this is why the RIAA is striking us now when we are most vulnerable.

The SaveNetRadio.org "Day of Silence" was by all accounts a great success. The websites were overloaded and the switchboards in DC were overwhelmed with callers supporting Internet radio. Here’s what RAIN (www.kurthanson.com) is reporting:

"Organizers of (Tuesday's) Day of Silence... reported today that more than 14 million net radio listeners visited SaveNetRadio.org, and over 350,000 thousand phone calls were placed to Members of the House and Senate calling on Congress to enact legislation that would preserve the future of Internet radio during the day long protest.

The Day of Silence was initiated by the Radio and Internet Newsletter (RAIN) and sponsored by the SaveNetRadio coalition.

"'The silence that greeted millions of Internet radio listeners yesterday certainly turned up the volume in Congress,' SaveNetRadio spokesperson, Jake Ward said. 'Yesterday's day of silence was a tremendous success but the clock continues to tick... it is time for Congress take action.'

"To date more than 400,000 emails and letters have been sent to Capitol Hill by supporters of Internet radio and an estimated half a million phone calls have been made to individual offices."

Keep your fingers crossed for us Kevin, and may I suggest you post an entry in our guestbook about your thoughts. It might help spur on other listeners.

Thanks for writing, helping, and continuing to listen to NativeRadio.com!

With respect,
Patrick
2/2/2006     Letter to Greenland!

2/1/2006

His Excellency Hans Enoksen
Premier Greenland

Dear Premier Enoksen,

On behalf of over one million visitors to NativeRadio.com, we wish to congratulate you, the Greenland government, and the People of Greenland on your courageous stand to eliminate all purchases of Canadian sealskins!

Your decision proves there are still leaders in the world that have compassion towards animals "without a voice", and have the courage to act decisively in the face of atrocity. You have proven to the world that Greenland is a country that cares about the animal kingdom and is willing to take a stand.

NativeRadio.com became involved with the plight of the Harp seals the moment we became aware of this senseless commercial slaughter. We have worked tirelessly to do whatever we can to make the world aware of this inhumane carnage. Your courage and compassion is exemplarily, and will show the world that this is not an aboriginal subsistence issue.

Your actions will have a dramatic impact on protecting these defenseless animals as well as the aboriginal populations that the Canadian government seeks to hide behind. You will be remembered for your compassion, and have helped to restore some balance to the world. You have shown that Siumut is more than a political party and that "forward" is a way of life. NativeRadio.com applauds you and Greenland!

Sincerely,

Patrick Doyle

1/24/2006     Buffalo Slaughter!

Shame on the Montana Department of Livestock! Shame on the National Park Service! Shame on the Cattle Ranchers!

150 years ago they slaughtered the Buffalo to wipe out Indigenous Nations. This time they are slaughtering the Buffalo under a lie to protect their cattle.

Please click this link to see a video of Yellowstone Bison falling through ice during hazing operation by the Montana Department of Livestock!

These are Bison that are supposed to be protected in Yellowstone National Park. When does this insanity stop? When will we as a Nation rise up and make our Park Service and the Montana Department of Livestock accountable for their continued atrocities?
