In 2001 I was introduced to Brad Clonch's music with his release of Midnight. An exceptional debut album featuring Brad on piano solos when he was just 21.
It was a calming and relaxing evening with a keyboard virtuoso!
Brad released "Finding Windsong" in 2006 and once again I was truly amazed at how he had matured (his hair had gotten longer also).
He was now mastering the Native flute and combining his skills with the keyboard to create an amazing journey.
The other day I received "Unconquered" and once again Brad has undergone a metamorphosis. This time with the amazing Jeff Carpenter, Boyd Weldon Gross and James Monroe they are "Injunuity" and they FLY!
Injunuity is a group of highly talented and respectful masters of their craft. Keep an eye on these young men. We expect great things for them. Please allow us to introduce "Injunuity"!
This amazing video tells the story of fourteen American Bison (Tatanka) that were brought to Catalina Island in 1924 to make a silent movie. When the crew departed, the Bison remained.
By the mid 1980's the herd had grown to about 600, to many to maintain a healthy herd.
This movie tells the story of all but 150 of the Bison going home to the Rosebud Lakota Tribe.
Made possible by a gift from The Morongo Band of Mission Indians, and Sponsored by the Catalina Island Conservancy. Directed, cut and shot by Shawn Thompson.
Featuring the music of Robbie Robertson, this will bring tears of joy. Sponsored by the Catalina Island Conservancy. Directed, cut and shot by Shawn Thompson
Artist Spotlight: Robert Mirabal "In The Blood" & "Pueblo Christmas"
Robert Mirabal Launches New Star Road Records Website!
I have been a fan of Robert Mirabal, and playing his music, for almost a decade. Robert is truly one of the most gifted entertainers in the world today. Raised traditionally, and living in the Taos Pueblo, Robert's music and stories combine his Tiwa heritage with a cutting-edge crossover style.
Robert has recently released "In The Blood" on his new Star Road Records label and this album is "Pure Robert". A lot of songs feature his Tiwa language and heritage and it will mesmerize you!
He has also released Pueblo Christmas on Star Road Records. Pueblo Christmas is a truly unique presentation of these favorite Christmas classics. I particularly like Robert's historical background on these songs and the timeline of Native American history when they were composed.
The band features Robert Mirabal (Vocals, flutes and percussion), Robert's brother Patrick Shendo-Mirabal (Vocals, flutes, percussion and tribal drums), Larry Mitchell (Guitars and programming), and Paul Fowler (Piano, keyboards, programming, vocals).
Star Road Records' new website was created by NativeRadio.com and my partner at Taos Interactive Dave Travis. StarRoadRecords.com features Single Song Downloads, Music Jukeboxes, Tour Schedules, Blogs, Gift Shop, and Photo Galleries. 95% of the website has robust Content Management Systems (CMS) allowing Robert, Drew and Barbara to update their website from the road, simply by using their browser.
Artist Spotlight: Jonny Lipford
Album: "Transitions"
Jonny Lipford is an 18 year old, self taught, flute enthusiast from Northwest Florida. He's been playing the flute for 4 years. The moment he first played a flute, he realized that this was no whim. His passion for the flute has led him on a journey that is shaping his music career. In this short amount of time he has had the opportunity to play with several well known flutists including, Mary Youngblood. Mary has been an inspiration to him. Even at such a young age, Jonny is considered by many to be an "Old Soul". He's beginning to do more and more performances around the country as his venues are increasing in number.
"Jonny has just released his first album titled, "Transitions: Out of the Flames & Into the Wind". This new CD is a musical journey filled with a variety of styles fashioned in a melodious way. Both flute solos and flute accompanied by other instruments are featured on this album. Each of which were written and performed by Jonny.
Jonny's innate sense of composition and mature understanding of melody touches my soul. I am proud to have been a mentor, a big sista, and a friend to this wonderful spirit and his family...
This charming young man is an OLD soul, you sense it the minute you hear the first note. Jonny's pensive and mature music is full of emotion and experience that baffle us, especially when we learn that this composer is only 17/18 year old! I can't wait to see where this young man's journey takes him.
I see myself sitting in an audience, tears rolling down my face as I watching him win his place in this wondrous and complex world called the music business! Whatever happens little brother- follow your heart! "Quyanaa" (Thanks!) for your gift of song..."
Mary Youngblood - Multi-Award Winning Native American Flute Artist (Aug 10, 2007)
My friend T.W.W. Buffalo has just released his newest book "An Old Man's Lesson on the Mountain".
This is an amazing lesson of LOVE and concern for all living beings on our planet, the Earth. A lesson given by a very unlikely group, which had been told about by Native American elders but never truly understood or believed.
This story takes you on a journey with a man who, while trying to escape and forget all the stresses of life, received a lesson. More aptly put, he received a crash course in life, love and what he could do to help if he would only listen.
Artist Spotlight: BlackRaven
Album: "First Flight"
BlackRaven consists of Daniel Hicks & Charles Button, and "First Flight" is a great debut album.
This is contemporary Indigenous flute music with dynamic melodies on Native American flutes & backdrops of guitars, keyboards, bass, drums & percussion. Ranging from contemporary ballads to traditionally inspired songs.
"First Flight" also features some of this genres best artists including Will Clipman (percussionist for The R.Carlos Nakai Quartet), Aaron White (from Burning Sky), Richard "Koz" Kinsinski, Mark Thomas, George Quirin, Danii Odudua, Josiah Hicks, Buddha & Buddy.
This is a beautiful & esoteric flute album that Rocks. An inner-play of flutes, guitars, bass, keyboards, drums & percussion that will send you on a deep journey. No more "New Age Sleepytime Flute Music". Once you hear it, you'll want it. This album has a balance of beauty & power that is sure to please!
Also appearing on the album keyboardist Richard Kosinski a noted composer from Los Angeles, classically trained Spanish guitarist George Quirin from Santa Barbara, guitarist Mark Thomas and percussionist Danii Odudua are both local legends in Northern Arizona.
Redboy has really been a Spiritual listening pleasure for us. His music reminds me of sitting in front of a campfire and listening to the sounds around me. Keep an eye on this young man! This is how Anwaan Jiimis (Ron James) describes himself:
"Redboy is the latest project by me, R Neil James, from Fumbalina. The idea behind Redboy is simply this; I wanted to write more personal music about my experiences growing up an Indian boy in a white world and I decided it would be better to do so outside of the Fumbalina environment. The music is very similar to the Fumbalina project, but the difference here is that lyrics are going to be more personal in nature, and thematic to my Ojibway heritage, and to my experiences with racism, injustice, prejudice, stereotyping, and all of the other issues that face most Anishnabe people here on Turtle Island. The name is not meant to be controversial. It is simply taking a derogatory name I was called as a child and empowering myself by turning it into something positive. This is a celebration of life, love, music, and passion. I am very proud to be Anishnabe and this is my way of expressing that pride."
Mountain Dawn, a local Texas author, has brought her Native American traditions and beliefs and her concern for the Earth's health into a format that is understandable and touching.
The world has been devastated by the catastrophic storms and flooding of the arctic glaciers. The World's United Nations government had been unable to stop the global warming before over half the earth's glaciers had melted. The Earth's maps had been changed forever. Weather patterns had changed also. Communication systems were devastated. Electricity was available only to the very wealthy and only in the major cities that had gone to solar and wind power before the storms.
Then the area that was once the Great Lakes was poisoned! Water supplies were poisoned for hundreds of miles. People were dying by the thousands, then millions. Terrorist attack? This is the story of one group of people, determined to survive and to save their spiritual beliefs and as many other people as they could along the way.
This cookbook, Where People Feast - An Indigenous Peoples Cookbook, sheds light on the unique culinary traditions and cooking techniques of Native American people who live along the Pacific Northwest Coast of British Columbia, Canada. This collection shows how to prepare and preserve wild game, seafood, vegetables, fruits, and unusual ingredients such as oolichan, herring roe, and sopalali berries, (all of which can be purchased online from distributors if not from your local, specialty or gourmet markets). Where People Feast is co-authored by the mother-and-daughter team, Dolly (Watts) McRae and Annie Watts. Where People Feast celebrates Dolly and Annies twelve years spent running their restaurant (Liliget is a Gitksan word meaning where people feast) which was designed by internationally renowned Canadian architect Arthur Erickson.
Native Americans Growing Hemp Find That Tribal Sovereignty
Collides With Government Policy in P.O.V.'s "Standing Silent Nation".
Alex White Plume and his extended Lakota family, or tiospaye, are known on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Reservation for the determination and industriousness with which they have faced the hard economic choices imposed by history and reservation life. Undeterred by poor soil and uncertain weather on their land, the White Plumes planted alfalfa, barley and corn. They raised horses and buffalo. All of which brought the family little better than a subsistence life and continued reliance on government subsidies. Still, the family was resolved to achieve economic self-sufficiency, thus preserving the Lakota traditions and bonds that sustain the identity of family and tribe.
So, after much research, and under Alex's leadership, the family planted industrial hemp, the non-psychoactive relative of marijuana. As Alex discovered, and as told in Standing Silent Nation, the new P.O.V. documentary recounting the White Plumes' tragi-comic adventures in hemp growing, the world is in the midst of a boom market for hemp products. The demand is no less in the United States, with this anomaly - hemp products can be sold in this country, but hemp growing is a felony. Alex wasn't out to challenge the logic of the federal government's drug war, but figured that tribal sovereignty allowed him to plant hemp as surely as it allowed casinos elsewhere. He was wrong.
P.O.V.'s "Arctic Son" Measures the Distance Between Father and Son,
Tradition and Modernity
In the tiny village of Old Crow, 80 miles north of the Arctic Circle, a father and his son are reunited after almost 25 years apart. They share a name and a bloodline, but the worlds they know and the lifestyles they lead are as different as their respective hometown climates. Stanley Njootli Sr. is a hunter, a man of the land steeped in native traditions. Stanley Jr., who has been raised by his mother in Washington State, immerses himself in hip-hop music and video games, and is drifting deeper into drugs and alcohol. After a lifetime apart, the two meet again in the raw, quiet beauty of the Canadian Yukon.
Last week I received a CD from a friend of Dave Trezak with his new release "Native Country". It's so very good that I wanted to help Dave with some well deserved additional exposure.
"Native Country" needs to be heard, and appreciated. We have created a small sample of this below. Listen and see if you agree with us that Dave Trezak is one of the best kept secrets in Indian Country!
The Kentucky Center for Native American Arts and Culture (KCNAAC) is building an educational and interpretive Center.
The purpose of the KCNAAC is to honor, celebrate and recognize Native American peoples' heritage and contributions to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the Ohio River Valley region, and other contiguous states.

Shelley Morningsong (Northern Cheyenne) is one of those voices that combines purity of purpose and delivery, with the stories of the "Old Ones".
Shelley is simply amazing and her debut album "Out of the Ashes" is a must have addition to your collection. Shelley Morningsong has arrived folks and we guarantee she will win "multiple" music awards over the next few months!
"Music has always been a big part of my life. I have been singing and writing songs since I was very young. The personal goal that I have for my music is to write and sing songs incorporating Native sounds and words which will educate, encourage and bring joy to people of all ages and from every walk of life.
My heart is burdened for the loss of Indian customs, language and the loss of self-esteem. There are also many non-Indian brothers and sisters that have such a deep need to learn Native ways due to their own longing to be connected to the earth and spirituality. I believe we are all connected, that everything is one thing. Music is the language that speaks to all people and through my music I desire to touch hearts and change lives."
Canyon Records recording artist Peter Phippen is an innovative performer of flutes of the world. Researching the performance technique and history of his vast collection of antique and contemporary anthropological wind instruments ultimately led him to bring this knowledge to concert stages and schools.
Since 1993, Phippen has performed concerts, workshops, artist residencies and assembly programs across the United States and Europe that are both educational and entertaining - an enchanting mix of the very old and very new in music.
One of the greatest joys of NativeRadio.com is we get to listen to this amazing music from so many incredibly talented artists.
A couple of weeks ago we received a new album from Michael Bucher called "Seven". We listened, and our jaws dropped. Several people in the room looked at each other then looked at me. I hit the replay button and we haven't stopped replaying it ...!
If Michael doesn't have a record deal in the next 8 weeks, I will start my own label just to sign him (smile). Michael Bucher is the next Bill Miller. His guitar riffs are flawless, his voice will draw you in, and his lyrics walk with you like a comfortable friend by your side. This is simply the finest debut album we've ever heard. "Seven" was produced by another of our favorite performers, Canyon recording artist Peter Phippen. The production value is like every album Peter produces ..."perfect".
Wolfs Robe is a great guy, a gifted musician, and a generous teacher. He plays from the heart, and his music shows it. He's about to release his fourth album, and we can't wait to hear it. Here's David Wolfs Robe aka Flute Man in his own words:
"I like to think of myself as a Musician Preservationist. I look at it this way, I was given a gift of the Native American flute from it's traditions to it's construction and finally it's Legacy. I carry a key ...an important one, just like many of us and when we put all of those keys together they open doors, for everyone especially our young people who are Our Legacy!"
I first learned about Paul and Exitwound when he sent me his music. After listening to his music I called Paul to congratulate him for having created one of the most unique sounds in all of Indian Country. Paul calls his music "Cool Metal", I call it "Pure Genius"! His guitar riffs are fresh, unique, masterful and mind bending. Paul is one of the most respectful people I've met. In short ..he's cool! Here's Paul in his own words:
I'm a 42 yr old Northern Cheyenne Solo Artist out of Billings, MT, and Creator of EXITWOUND. I'm newly engaged, raising 4 wonderful childern, I also am a Certified P.C.A. John is a Master Carver, Master Photographer, Painter and a Professional Artist for 30 years. He is a Graduate of the Vancouver School of Art, Emily Carr College of Art and Design. John carves with a focus in Northwest Coastal Formline.
I've had the pleasure of knowing John for a while now and encourage anyone interested in collecting museum quality wood carvings to contact him. He's great to talk to, is committed to indigenous causes, and is available for commission pieces.
John is of Cherokee heritage and he currently resides in Washington, DC. His carvings are some of the finest we've seen and are truly museum quality.
Sean Gallagher is part of the 13th region corporation and Alaskan native. He have had an interest in skin boats as far back as he can remember, and has always felt the need to be close to his culture and learn of the things people before him made and did. There is a place for us all on this planet. The identity of ethnic people is constantly stretched and being diminished. The regaining my culture is important to me.
The King Island kayak was invented out of necessity to survive the harsh conditions on King Island, which is located in the Bering Sea off the coast of Willy Lagoon by about 70 miles. Willy Lagoon is in between Nome and Teller on the Teller road. Kayaks were necessary for trade, hunting and also transportation while living in this very remote village. The kayak itself is said to date back about three to five thousand years, but this is up for debate because there was no written history of the kayak. There is only the history of words passed down through generations, the oral history of the native people of the north. Thus it is very possible that it dates back even further in pre-history than we know.
John Two-Hawks
John Two-Hawks is a performer in a class by himself. I have had the pleasure of knowing John for a while now and have been truly amazed by his talent, kindness, and humility.
John recently toured with Europe's hottest metal group, Nightwish to sold out performances and whose tour ended with a concert at Hartwall Areena with JTH for 12,000 fans! John's performance and his speech in Lakota is amazing. Be sure to click the link to hear an excerpt from this amazing concert!
Once and a while a band catches our attention that literally makes us stop in our tracks and pay close attention, very close attention...! Marc Brown and The Blues Crew is just such a band. And this is after only hearing a 30 second sound byte!
Marc Brown introduced his Blues Crew once by saying, "you probably won't see another blues band with an Indian, an Eskimo, a black guy and a white guy." The diversity is accidental, says Brown, who is Athabascan.
Souls On Monday is a five piece band from the Coushatta tribe of Louisiana. Their sound is very melodic with some heavy driving grooves, and their originals have a touch of classic, metal, grunge and so on.
The band started back in 1989, teaching each other and learning only by ear. Since then they've been featured on local and surrounding newspapers. Other reservations around the states caught wind of the band and asked to be interviewed for their newspaper, magazines, and radio stations. These guys "Rock The House"!
DOG FACED GODS (DFG) is not your typical burgeoning hard-rock band. Based on one of the smallest Native American reservations in the U.S., the Cali quintet consisting of vocalist Raymond "Shorty" White Owl, guitarist David "Snakeyez" Torres, rhythm guitarist Jack Daniels, bassist Fernando "’Nando" Gonzales and drummer Paul Garcia formed a mere 14 months ago – but is already creating tremors with its arresting debut, Stoned Council released on Voodoo Nation Records.
Big City Indians are a wonderful group from Vienna, Austria that have several Native Americans in their lineup. They call their emotional energetic sound "Native Indian Power Groove", which is a mix of Native music with a touch of Rock´n Roll and Blues flair. They present a groove for all senses, full of strong sounds. They have native intertribal basics, but added some more ethnic sounds, tribal beats, mystic ethereal keyboard sounds, rocking riffs, Native American Flute, meditative sounds and grooving guitar.
Mark Thunderwolf is a Native American flutist and recording artist of Lakota Sioux and Eastern Band Cherokee Wolf Clan descent.
He was gifted his first flute in March 2001 at a wolf sanctuary in southern California where he was also adopted in the Apache family of the lady who owns and runs the sanctuary. He released his first CD "Thru the Eyes…of My Brother" in May of 2002, after only playing the flute for 8 months and in April of 2003 he released his second CD "Spirit Call". A portion of the proceeds he receives from CD sales go to help a wolf sanctuary in southwest New Mexico that has almost 300 rescued wolf and wolf-dog mixes.
