Covenant
Joanne Shenandoah
Covenant,is one of the most powerful words among the Haudenosaunee, "People Building The Longhouse' or the 'Six Nations Iroquois'. It is a word which is used in our agreements as a reminder of our responibilities for the earth and to each other. Without the Covenants of the great law of peace, the core code of laws for the Haudenosaunee, we would not have survived as a people. Certain covenants of the great law have been affirmed with the sacred Wampum, representing promises which cannot be violated, extendind across generations. When our ancestors first encountered the Europeans, they made a covenant with the colonists upheld through the exchange of wampum belts. The treaty with the Dutch around the year 1621 is called the Kahswenta or "Two Row Wampum" signifying that all people were to respect each other's cultures and traditions while noy interfering in their respective affairs. This treaty was later reaffirmed when the Confederacy made two treaties with France and En! gland called the silver covnant chain. This was later presented to the americans and subsequently called the George Washington Covenant. Silver was used to indicate that this peace agreement, a sacred pledge, would last forever.
