Raven in the Snow represents a big change in musical direction for Bill Miller. The acoustic backing of previous recordings is replaced here by a wall of ringing electric guitars, organ, and drums that sound like a cross between U2 and the E-Street Band. Miller's passionate vocals have always been closer to rock than folk, and he handily soars over the instrumentalists here. "Brave Heart," anchored with a stark, martial drum part, offers a stirring tribute to perseverance and solidarity. The driving title song rails against injustice, but its ultimate message is hard to discern.
